Life Insurance: 

Life insurance is a contract between the policy holder and the insurer, where the insurer agrees to pay a set amount of money upon the death of the insured or policy holder.  In return, the policy holder agrees to pay a premium at regular intervals or in a lump sum. 

The benefit is paid to the designated beneficiaries if an "insured event" (death) occurs with regard to the policy holder.  Specific exclusions are often written into the agreement to limit the carriers' liability exposure such as suicide, war, and riot.
